Okay, we all
know that Cantonese is a rich language, with all its rhymes and tones.
But would somebody
please tell me the significance of the following ?
「87」「25」「MM」「HK2668」「HK8989」「HK69」「HK332」「HK1188」「HK608」「75」「63」
These are all vanity
license plates in Hong Kong much sought after.
But I don’t have a clue why.
Any blogger who can
explain in full will be crowned my second favorite blogpal. (Sorry, my favorite
blogpal was determined years ago)

You did better than me la ;-)
Delete8=發達,9=長長久久,6=六六無窮,3=三三不盡/生猛/風生水起,2=易。
ReplyDelete28=易發,328=生意發,168=一路發,899=發達發到長長久久。
4=死,所以不受歡迎。但上海話4同水同音,水=$,所以上海船運大亨個車牌就係4。
Thank you for the detailed explanation.
Delete
DeletePeople would like 1828 too. I guess you know why now.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I personally won't like it as 日發夜發, what if it's not 發達, it's something else like 發病. You just never know.
Based on what I've heard in recent years, the word 發 in HK nowadays implies 發達/財.
