Common Sense, Common Knowledge

有時食飽飯等 X X 

諗埋啲無謂野... 

Key in "common sense", Google Translate returns 常識, as does SDL Free Translation. 

But I thought 常識 was "common knowledge", no? 

So I keyed in "common knowledge", and guess what? It still returns 常識.  And SDL returns 共同知識. 

NOW WAIT JUST A COTTON-PICKING MINUTE.... 

There is a huge difference between "sense" and "knowledge".... 

Paralink translates "common sense" as 常識; 天生的判斷力. 

So, 常識 and 天生的判斷力 are the same in Chinese, or do they presume that it's the same in English...but then Paralink also returns just 常識 on "common knowledge".... 

I once read a translation of "common sense" as 基本理智. While I'm no Chinese language scholar by any means, that seemed more reasonable. 


So, what gives? 

Up with 耕東蝦! Down with 煲冬瓜!!

Okay, we all know that Cantonese is a rich language, with all its rhymes and tones.

But would somebody please tell me the significance of the following ?

「87」「25」「MM」「HK2668」「HK8989」「HK69」「HK332」「HK1188」「HK608」「75」「63」

These are all vanity license plates in Hong Kong much sought after.  But I don’t have a clue why.

Any blogger who can explain in full will be crowned my second favorite blogpal. (Sorry, my favorite blogpal was determined years ago)

煲冬瓜 to authentic Chinese please

Ok, I entered "halibut" into Google Translate and it returned 大比目魚.

I went to my neighborhood fish market asking for 大比目魚 and they looked at me funny, and not because of my cowboy hat either, I'm sure.

Of course, as a filthy rotten stinking commie organization, it's only natural that Google would translate everything into 煲冬瓜.

So, to all my HKer blogpals out there, what's 大比目魚 in authentic Chinese?
