Okay, we all know that Cantonese is a rich language, with all its rhymes and tones.

But would somebody please tell me the significance of the following ?

「87」「25」「MM」「HK2668」「HK8989」「HK69」「HK332」「HK1188」「HK608」「75」「63」

These are all vanity license plates in Hong Kong much sought after.  But I don’t have a clue why.

Any blogger who can explain in full will be crowned my second favorite blogpal. (Sorry, my favorite blogpal was determined years ago)

Judging a Book by Its Cover

After a toastmasters meeting one night, I passed by Pacific Place on my way to the bus stop.  There came a 北姑 with her hands full of shopping bags.  She accosted me and started spewing 煲冬瓜....

豈有此理喺我地頭煲冬瓜，嫌命長乎, 誅你九族吖嗱 

My lightbulb lit up, so I said,"Sorry, can you speak English?"

死北姑， 哩次重大唔倒你...

點知，she flashes me a sweet smile, and said,"Of course, would you direct me to the nearby underground train station, please?'....IN PERFECT OXFORD ENGLISH. 

She even thanked me profusely after I gave her directions, told me I was very kind....

死死氣要講番聲 you're welcome....

There's nothing more humiliating for a die-hard Hong Konger like me to have to utter the word "welcome" to a 北姑.

Agreed?

Valentine's Day 2014

The day before V-Day, I had no idea where to take LC for dinner.  So I wrote a post on Facebook asking for recommendations.  There were some suggestions, but two people said the best dinner is home-made. 

My favorite blogpal said most good places will be packed, with reservations made weeks ago.

係噃，今年V-Day 係星期五，兼年初十五，邊道有得食吖

下午仆倒走去街市買啲 LC 鍾意嘅餸...

                                                                  龍蝦一隻, $168

鹽焗雞半隻, $45

 

 

結數：五百柴都唔使...

鹽焗雞熟買，其他我煮, 我慢手慢腳都搞成個鐘頭...

但係，喺屋企食舒服好多，冇人眼光光催你

Oh, by the way, the cost is all-time-low for a V-Day dinner.  Many of the nicer places are charging about $1,000 per person tonight, for a very 普通 dinner.  係咪"文本"呢

豈有此理...過多幾年我能夠以老賣老嗰時至同你班0靚妹仔算賬...

見過哩個牌子 mineral water 幾十年, 不嬲以為係"文本"貨，因佢貴普通牌成倍.


最近老坑氣發作，要八吓，買咗樽嚟飲...


係好飲好多喎...

Imitating Isis, again

One of my toastmasters clubs held a Christmas Party here.
 
我地包場， 二萬五柴，最多五十人, includes dinner. 

LC 起先話，"五百柴 per head?  Outrageous!"

一路食，LC 一路話, "哩間野嘅 profit margin 唔會好多，because of the very high quality of the food".

So last night we took my 契娘 and 家姐 there. Although my 契娘 is not into western food that much, she said "哩間野真係幾好食".

So there you have it, straight from LC and my 契娘.

巴士佬月薪過萬?

With weather cooling down, and humidity moderating, I took a 30-minute walk to the gym to engage in a bit of self-torture.

On the way, I ran into a couple from 支那, who claimed to be tourists from 順德 looking for directions to the train station, speaking pretty good Cantonese.  Since I was in an unusually benevolent mood, I decided to help them instead of rob them....

We chatted about a number of things, like real estate prices, and workers pay.  Then they pointed to a bus and asked how much a bus driver made in HK.  I said about $15k.

即係一萬人民幣?

我話萬一二倒啦...

咦，咁同上面差唔多咗噃...

So bus drivers in 順德 make over $10k 人仔??

I think these two da lu ren are full of it....
